CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
Featured in the latest Filipina Women's Network Magazine, the FWN100 2012 finalists had to answer the question: What Filipino custom or tradition would you like to pass on to others? Interestingly enough, many of the finalists listed their answer as "mano po," the showing of respect to an elder by the touching of the elder's hand to one's forehead.
One 2012 finalist, Theresa Chua (Builder & Emerging Leader), writes, "Living in a culture that typically diminishes senior citizens, I feel it is critical to make a profound effort to keep this tradition alive. Our elders are fountains of wisdom that for the most part, remain untapped. Our elders are society's best mentors and deserve our respect and gratitude."
Another popular response from the FWN100 2012 Finalists was "bayanihan," which finalist Vivian Zalvidea Araullo (Innovator & Thought Leader) defines as "harnessing the community spirit to help others. In my opinion, Filipinos are generally hospitable, friendly, and really want to help others. Bayanihan would go a long way in today's world."
In addition, finalist Marian Catedral-King (Behind the Scenes Leader) agrees, saying, "The act of being selfless and being ready to help anyone in need is the ultimate word to describe a Pinoy or Pinay. My family has always instilled in us the importance of helping and giving oneself and time to others."
