Do you know the history of Filipino martial arts, known as Eskrima or Kali? Eskrima is the traditional martial arts of the Philippines, which emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, or other improvised weapons. According to Mark V. Wiley's book, Filipino Martial Culture, "the origin of eskrima can be traced back to the fighting systems used by Filipinos during internal conflicts. Settlers and traders travelling through the Malay Archipelago brought the influence of silat as well as Chinese and Indian martial arts." In numerous movies, the use of eskrima can be seen. For example, if you've ever watched Matt Damon in the Bourne Identity, you'll be able to see some of his Filipino martial art moves that he uses to fight off the bad guys! It has been said that Damon trained with Dan Inosanto, a Filipino-American martial arts instructor who was a student of Bruce Lee.
