More Vigilance vs. Trafficking by Marriage
The clamor for upscaling the fight against Human Trafficking has resulted in tighter monitoring by concerned government agencies in the Inter-Agency Council Against Human Trafficking (IACAT). CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS

For this week's issue of ePahayagan, this section should probably be temporarily changed to "Connecting with MY Pinay Roots" because recently, I have gathered some interesting facts on my family history.

Over the weekend while enjoying a relaxing visit to my parents' home, I came across a thick, heavy book sitting on the coffee table. The book was blue with the words "Students' Philippine Almanac" in shiny gold letters across the front. As I turned the book over in my hands, a yellow, crumpled post-it note was sticking out from between the worn out pages. It read: "Grandma's great uncle, Camilo Jacob" and had a squiggly arrow pointing down towards a picture. After taking a good look at the photo and reading the small column to the left of it, I learned that Camilo Jacob, my great great great uncle, was one of the fifteen martyrs of the 1897 Execution of the Bicol Martrys at Luneta! According to the article in the Students' Philippine Almanac:
The fifteen Bicolanos were among the first victims of Spanish cruelty after the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution. Of the fifteen, eleven were executed at Luneta and the rest died during incarceration or in exile. The fifteen martyrs were: Father Gabriel Prieto, Father Severino Diaz, Father Innocencio Herrera, Manuel Abella, Domingo Abella, Ramon Abella, Camilo Jacob, Tomas Prieto, Florencio Lerma, Macario Valentin, Leon Hernandez, Mariano Arana, and Mariano Ordenanza.
I am deeply honored to be related to a passionate man who was unafraid to defend his country. Recognize any of the names listed? Let me know! - epahayagan@ffwn.org
