CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
For all the art lovers out there, have you heard of Fernando Amorsolo before? Well, if you haven't...Amorsolo is considered to be among the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines. Born in Manila in 1892, Amorsolo is best known for his use of light in his paintings of rural Philippine landscapes and portraits. With his impressionistic technique and style, Amorsolo has been referred to as a "pioneer of Philippine art":
Amorsolo's pioneering use of impressionistic techniques and shimmering sunlight on pastoral landscape is significant not only in the development of Philippine art, but also in the formation of Filipino notions of self and identity. His idyllic country scenes, beautiful maidens, and colorfully dressed peasants planting or harvesting rice distilled an imagined sense of nationhood in counterpoint to the American colonial rule - an idealized image of the true Filipino that persist today. (Fruit Gatherer, 1950)
As an artist myself with a college degree in fine arts, it is always a true treat to learn about important art figures in different countries and cultures, especially my own. Maybe one day I can be a pioneer for Fil-Am women artists!
Are you an artist, too? Let me know at epahayagan@ffwn.org
