CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
Are you familiar with t'nalak? If you're not, t'nalak is a cloth woven with abaca fibers only by women, specifically by the T'boli women of Lake Sebu, in the Mindanao region of the Philippines. The patterns on the traditional cloth are primarily three colors: red, black, and the natural color of the abaca fibers. Said to symbolize birth, life, and death amongst other things, the patterns and designs on the beautiful cloths are created from the dreams of the women, who are sometimes referred to as "dream weavers".
The knowledge of weaving these traditional cloths, young T'boli women learn from older generations; their sisters, mothers, and grandmothers pass down the tradition.
