Woohoo! On August 27, 2013, California Gov. Brown made voting more accessible for Californians by signing into law bill AB 817 that allows lawful permanent residents to volunteer as multilingual poll workers! This is hugely exciting because these volunteers will open doors for thousands of voters who would have otherwise encountered language barriers. This new law will take effect January 1, 2013 -- in time for the 2014 elections. - http://act.engagementlab.org/sign/18mr_bilingualCA

CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
I've heard the word "intramuros" a few times and always wondered what it is and what it means. So I did a little researching. In Pilipinas A to Z by Melchizedek Maraon Solis, the word intramuros refers to "'inside wall,'...the stone enclosure built at the height of the Spanish occupation to protect Manila." The stone wall was built by the Spanish to "fortify" the entirety of Manila, and only the Spanish stayed within Intramuros, using it to separate themselves from everyone else (Solis, 29). Intramuros is the oldest district in Manila, containing tons of history (Wikipedia). If you want to read more about the history of Intramuros, or other interesting facts about Philippines, check out Solis' book Pilipinas A to Z.
