    Report from Isabelita Manalastas (Global100 '13) on Typhoon Fundraising in Japan:
    Just as an information on what is going on in Tokyo to help Yolanda typhoon victims:
    1. Simbang Gabi started on Dec. 15, 2013 at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Tokyo, and will end on Dec. 23;
    2. All collections during the mass will be for the benefit of the typhoon victims;
    3. Other churches have a second collection during Sunday masses, and proceeds for these will go to the typhoon victims;
    4. Various Filipino community organizations here are also raising funds.  The Association of Filipino Students in Japan has, so far, already raised almost a million yen (almost US$10,000).  I do not have information on the amounts raised by other community organizations;
    5. My company is offering gratis remittance charge, for remittances that will be sent to the ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya A/C;
    6. Many ordinary Japanese people, and many Japanese companies are also offering various help, monetary and otherwise.

    IN THIS ISSUE:

    Calling Awesome FWN Women Who Lunch! Are you in Manila December 17 (Tuesday)? Invitation to lunch with our CEO, Marily Mondejar

    It's our first International FWN Roadshow! The FWN Board is thrilled to announce that the 11th Filipina Leadership Summit will be convened in Manila on October 2014. The summit's highlight, as you know, is the selection of the 100 Most Influential Filipina Women in the World. This action gets us closer to FWN's Pinay Power 2020 mission - "A Filipina woman leader in every sector of the economy."

    Many of our Philippines-based members have invited FWN to visit. So, here we are! We're coming home.

    Many of you have also kept us posted about your Philippine travels...and are either in Manila now or will be travelling to Manila soon for the various trips being organized for:

        Feed the Hungry typhoon disaster relief efforts,
        medical and humanitarian missions,
        family celebrations, class reunions, holiday vacations . . .

    So, if you are (or will be) in Manila and available on Tuesday, the 17th of December, please join Marily for a no-host lunch from 11:30am - 1:30pm at Chef Jessie Top of the City, 34th Floor, Citibank Tower, 8741 Paseo de Roxas, Makati City, Philippines. Tel nos (+632)-750-5810 to 11. RSVP HERE: www.FilipinaWomensNetwork.org/Events

    Marily will be arriving Manila Tuesday, Dec 10th-

    For the business aspect: Convene the Filipina Summit:
    Explore options in venues for our flagship hotel, Learning Journeys, very special events, speak with potential corporate sponsors, seek out notable speakers, meet with the new U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, seek opportunities to meet with President Aquino, and appreciate the cultural traditions that differentiate the Filipina woman leader.

    Personal Visit:

    As some of you may know, Tacloban City, my hometown, was hardest hit by Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda. My family was greatly affected and my nephew and his entire family have not been found. It's a very sad visit to Tacloban this time.

    “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” - Maya Angelou

    So...c'mon down and take 2 hours off and visit with "Awesome FWN Women Who Lunch" and let's laugh, tell stories, swap out-of-the-box ideas on how to make 2014 the bestest summit ever, drink, and celebrate life!

    If you want to join the Summit Steering Committee, meet with FWN CEO, Marily Mondejar, who will be in the Philippines until January 14.

    Women in Solidarity: REBUILD Tacloban Philippines for Filipina Women & Girls (after Typhoon Yolanda) - Jan. 23, 2014 @ Credo

    Please join FWN at a fundraising reception to help REBUILD Tacloban Philippines hosted by Bay Area Women's Groups in Solidarity with Filipina Women and Girls.

    We need your help to get their jobs back as businesses have been severely damaged and we have to find a way for these families to have a source of income. Our hearts go out to the Women of Candahug, the "Village of Widows" - the husbands, fathers, and sons stayed behind while the women and children escaped to higher group when Typhoon Haiyan swooped in at 200mph, surging the waves as high as 16 ft.

    Your contribution and 100% of proceeds will support the long-term rebuilding efforts through the help of Feed the Hungry Philippines - their volunteers and staff are now on-the-ground doing relief work.

    RSVP Now! -  https://WomenForTacloban.eventbrite.com

    Supervisor Chiu introduced a resolution last week that should be passed next Tuesday to ask Mayor Lee to allow city workers to more easily donate to a Typhoon Relief fund, either thru pre-tax payroll deductions, cash payments, donating earned vacation time, or other methods.

    The Board will vote on it Tuesday; if any folks want to testify in support, public comment is likely around 4pm or afterwards.

    Please pass this information on to any interested parties, especially those who may donate to Typhoon Relief in the near future.

    A couple times in my life I have attended a friend's Thanksgiving celebration. Having previously only attended my family's Filipino Thanksgiving celebrations all my life, it was a new and different experience. There were many things different, such as the food and the ambiance. After taking part in Thanksgiving celebration much different from my own, I found myself wondering about how other people and cultures celebrate the holidays.

    How are Filipino celebrations different from other cultures? Check out this article on NPR: "Project Expat: Thanksgiving In Faraway Lands" by Linton Weeks.

    As Thanksgiving draws near, take a moment to step outside your family traditions and ponder about how alike or unique your traditions are to other people's. And maybe next year, join a friend's celebration and experience something new.

    Don't forget to leave us a comment! We enjoy hearing from you.

    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
    While sifting through my Twitter feed a few days ago, I came across a tweet from NPR that offered a serious question I feel that every person should ask his or herself:
    If you live half a world away, out of danger and in comparative comfort, how do you try to understand a tragedy that sadly risks becoming just another headline? (Gurganus and Roose, NPR Books)
    As we hear about and watch the news on the aftermath of Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, it is important that we ask ourselves this question.

    I haven't been to the Philippines since I was a young girl, but learning about the devastation and trauma the typhoon brought to so many families brought tears to my eyes. When I look around during my daily commute, or when scroll through my Facebook and Twitter feed, I can't help but think that MORE people should care MORE about what happened in the Philippines, and that maybe they don't or just aren't showing it because they wrestle with how to connect to people across the globe.

    In NPR's book review, "In A Storm's Wake, Two Books Help Make Sense Of What Remains," posted last week, Dogeaters by Jessica Hagedorn and Flood by Robert Penn Warren may "help readers grasp the news still streaming in from the Philippines."
