                    CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
I'm sure you have heard of Wonder Woman, there is no doubt. But it was only until recently that I came across Darna, the Filipina superheroine in Filipino Comics. Darna, a female character created by Mars Revelo and Nestor Redondo, is Narda on Earth.
After spending some time reading up on Wonder Woman "Darna," I came across an article by Women's Media Center that talks about why the creation of Wonder Woman is so "unique" and "progressive," as well as the film "Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines".

                      CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
For this week's feature in the following section, I want to show some spotlight on TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design), which is a nonprofit whose main goal is to bring people together through the sharing of ideas. You're probably wondering how this "connects you with your pinay roots." So let me tell you. TED is a wonderful place that can provide the opportunity for you to share your Filipina American voice. Through TED's TEDx program, it allows "communities, organizations, and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level." TED also has a TED Fellows program, which "helps world-changing innovators from around the globe...amplify the impact" of their projects and work. Members of the TED Fellow program include several Filipinos, such as Francis de los Reyes III. Maybe YOU can become a TED fellow and represent Filipinas!

                      CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
If you were able to attend V-DAY FWN's The Vagina Monologues last Friday, April 5th, then you probably remember the part about Comfort Women. Not that your memory needs refreshing, Comfort Women consisted of women and girls "forced into prostitution corps created by the Empire of Japan." However, Japanese women were not the only ones forced into prostitution. In April 1993, 44 Filipinas came out claiming to be former comfort women during World War II for Japanese soldiers. Two of the Filipina women were Rosa Henson and Julia Porras, and claimed to be maids for the soldiers at an air raid shelter where they were forced to have sex with soldiers for months. Dozens of soldiers raped the women every day in a tunnel, where allegedly they were fed very little and given no clothing. These two women "represented the eighteen women by arriving in Tokyo to hold a press conference while speaking publicly about their experiences as comfort women." Henson and Porras also asked the Japanese government to include the history of the comfort women in school textbooks. Unfortunately, the claims of the Filipina women were "dismissed" by the Tokyo District Court on October 9, 1998. The women appealed, but again were rejected by the Tokyo High Court in December of 2000 (http://www.gwu.edu)

                      CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
On Monday, March 18, members of the Filipina Women's Network celebrated Women's History Month at the California State Capitol with Appointments Secretary Mona Pasquil, Senator Leland Yee, and Assemblymember Rob Bonta. In a meeting with Mona Pasquil, several FWN members in attendance inquired about appointment opportunities, which is great because the Filipina community could use more representation in state politics. If you're not familiar with Mona Pasquil, then you should be (she was on the cover of FWN's V-Diaries Magazine 2010, 7th Anniversary Issue)! Mona is the Appointments Secretary for California Governor Jerry Brown, in which she is in charge of overseeing who the governor appoints to join the California bureaucracy. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming appointed, you can visit: http://www.gov.ca.gov/m_appointments.php

Melchora Aquino, also known as "Tandang Sora", is noted as a Filipina revolutionary and national hero in the Philippines.
Acquiring the titles "Grand Woman of the Revolution" and "Mother of Balintawak", she was a refuge for those who were wounded during the revolution. At eighty-four years old, Aquino not only tended to their wounds, but also gave advice and prayers; she was seen as a motherly figure to the revolutionaries. Ultimately, the Spanish learned about Aquino's knowledge and aid to the revolutionaries, and was arrested.

Rename Alvarado Middle School after Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz:
One of five students in New Haven Unified School District are of Filipino descent. One out of three Union City residents are Filipino.

As community outreach efforts escalate in reflecting the diversity of Union City's constituents, an online petition is being circulated to garner support for the re-naming. To sign the petition, visit: www.ipetitions.com/petition/support_the_renaming/

                      Update from Superintendent Kari McVeigh:
The room was filled with students and families in support of the renaming of Alvarado Middle School to Itliong-Veracruz Middle School. The New Haven Unified School District Board announced at the meeting that only 10 speakers from each side speaking for or against supporting the renaming of the school would be allowed to speak even though 50 people from the audience signed up to speak. Protests from various FilAm members in support of the renaming (only 10 attendees signed up speaking against the renaming) identified this ruling as a violation of our first amendment right as well as the Brown Act because of a lack of previous notification of the process. The Board will be making a decision on March 19.
Meanwhile, PASE organizers at Union City would like to encourage hand written letters to be sent the Board members of New Haven Unified School District or electronic letters which are not template or format letters between now and March 19. Anyone who is able to approach their elected officials and leaders of various organizations (Filipino or otherwise) to send their words of support should do so prior to March 19.
Contact Information: New Haven Unified School District, 34200 Alvarado-Niles Rd., Union City, CA 94587

                      CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS
Since it is Women's History Month, I find it only fitting to feature a Filipina whose life and work has made positive contributions to society. Filipina pediatrician, and first woman to be admitted as a student of the Harvard Medical School, Fe del Mundo was a remarkable woman. She garnered international recognition with her pioneering work in pediatrics, receiving the Elizabeth Blackwell Award in 1966, the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1977, and the 15th International Congress of Pediatrics Award in 1977. In addition, she founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines. Fe is also credited with studies that led to the incubator and a jaundice relieving device.

Tell the President and HHS young women need access to safe contraception:

On Dec. 7 Senator Sebelius at Human & Health Services (HHS) rejected the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to make Plan B available over the counter for women of all ages. FDA experts reviewed scientific medical data and analysis and found no reason to deny women below 17 full access. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2491/p/dia/action/
                      • Young Asian/Pacific Islander (API) women, who are often uninsured or do not have access to a regular health care provider, will have difficulty obtaining prescriptions.
                      • API women 17 and older who are unable to provide documentation to verify their age will need to continue to need a prescription.
                      • The age restriction affects all women because everyone will continue to need to go to a pharmacist to access the medication.

Journalism FAIL: Tell Tribune Media Services to Pull Joel Brinkley - In early February, Tribune Media Services distributed the article "Despite Increasing Prosperity, Vietnam's Appetites Remain Unique" by Joel Brinkley. In the article, Brinkley claimed that the Vietnamese are an overly aggressive people compared to their "passive" Asian counterparts, which can be attributed to their rampant consumption of dogs, rats, and other wildlife. If you feel this article is ridiculously offensive, then please join us in sending a letter demanding that Tribune Media Services remove Brinkley as an "American Voices" columnist. - http://act.engagementlab.org/letter/18mr_journalismfail/
