Shared by Franklin Ricarte: The One Awesome Filipina Woman With Whom You Would Share a Meal
For their March Women's Month issues, Positively Filipino (LINK www.positivelyfilipino.com) would like to know, in 100 words or fewer, the One Awesome Filipina Womanundefinedliving or deadundefinedwith whom you would share a meal, and why. Send with a photo to submissions@positivelyfilipino.com. Our editor Rene wants to dine with Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago:"My famous awesome woman dinner guest has got to be Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. She's quite controversial but is easily among the most intelligent in the Senate. She is also quite eccentric. Recently, she was elected judge of the International Criminal Court of the United Nations. For dinner, I would prepare something delicious that would not worsen her high blood pressure, like grilled fish and veggies. Too bad that she probably doesn't drink alcohol, because of her health. But I would really like to pry into her thought process. What's behind the sometimes brilliant, sometimes absurd statements she has been known for…"

Tell the President and HHS young women need access to safe contraception:
On Dec. 7 Senator Sebelius at Human & Health Services (HHS) rejected the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to make Plan B available over the counter for women of all ages. FDA experts reviewed scientific medical data and analysis and found no reason to deny women below 17 full access. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2491/p/dia/action/
Young Asian/Pacific Islander (API) women, who are often uninsured or do not have access to a regular health care provider, will have difficulty obtaining prescriptions. API women 17 and older who are unable to provide documentation to verify their age will need to continue to need a prescription. The age restriction affects all women because everyone will continue to need to go to a pharmacist to access the medication.
Journalism FAIL: Tell Tribune Media Services to Pull Joel Brinkley - In early February, Tribune Media Services distributed the article "Despite Increasing Prosperity, Vietnam's Appetites Remain Unique" by Joel Brinkley. In the article, Brinkley claimed that the Vietnamese are an overly aggressive people compared to their "passive" Asian counterparts, which can be attributed to their rampant consumption of dogs, rats, and other wildlife. If you feel this article is ridiculously offensive, then please join us in sending a letter demanding that Tribune Media Services remove Brinkley as an "American Voices" columnist. - http://act.engagementlab.org/letter/18mr_journalismfail/ VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! At the sensational One Billion Rising San Francisco event at SF City Hall, GABRIELA-USA performed a beautiful flash mob amidst a crowd of more than a thousand people. You can watch their flashmob here: http://youtu.be/Uh9IAibO6gk. GABRIELA National Alliance of Women is a "grassroots-based alliance of more than 200 organizations, institutions, desks and programs of women all over the Philippines seeking to wage a struggle for the liberation of all oppressed Filipina women."
Do you know why the alliance is named Gabriela? Gabriela, standing for "General Assembly Binding Women for Reforms, Integrity, Education, Leadership, and Action," honors the first Filipina to lead a revolt against the Spanish colonization of the Philippines--Gabriela Silang. Gabriela, the wife of Ilocano insurgent leader, Diego Silang, led a troop of 2,000 fighters against the Spanish.
