INVITATION TO APPLY: Filipina Who Could Be President Fellowship- May 10 deadline
This is a Call to Action. Nominate a high-potential Filipina woman to apply for FWN's leadership training - the Filipina Women Who Could Be President Fellowship. Self-nominations are also welcome.We launch this exciting pilot program to mark and celebrate Women's History Month.
The President Fellowship fulfills one of FWN's goals to support our mission -
- Build the Filipina community's pipeline of qualified leaders to increase the odds that some will rise to the "president" position in all sectors.

FWN Fellowship Program
The program is designed to provide students, recent graduates and motivated individuals seeking career development through involvement with the Filipina Women's Network (FWN) as well as an opportunity for increased learning of the programs and initiatives to advance the activities, careers and status of Filipina women in the United States.
The Fellowship Program lasts from six months to one year. The FWN Board will screen interested applicants to determine academic or personal interest in Filipino culture and women's issues, relevant experience and career development goals.
Currently, the Filipina Women's Network is looking to fill one fellowship position to replace Fellow Leah Laxamana who is ending her fellowship for the 2011-2012 period.

Laarni San Juan: Another winner! FWN's Founding Board Member and FWN100 '07 was selected semi-finalist in the "What's Your Story" Essay challenge by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Engaging the South: White House Initiative Southeast Regional Action Summit, Atlanta, Georgia
U.S. Department of Education
On March 16, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) held its first ever Southeast Regional Action Summit in Atlanta, Georgia, where community leaders met with government representatives to draw out a plan for AAPIs in the South.
The state of Georgia now boasts more than 300,000 AAPIs, from schoolchildren to business owners and professionals in science and the arts. The growth has been robust, and with time, the expanding AAPI population will make its voice heard more and more. View article.
Happy Anniversary to the Affordable Care Act
Health Care Reform is Working for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities
On March 23, the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF) joined health advocates from around the nation in celebrating the second anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“Since 2010, our communities have rallied in support of health care reform and worked with policy makers to ensure the law meets the needs of diverse communities,” said Kathy Lim Ko, APIAHF president and CEO. “Health care reform is working for our communities, such as the family that previously struggled to pay for their son’s cancer medications and now has access to better coverage, to the small business owner who can now afford to provide health insurance for her employees.” View article.

The Center for Women Policy Studies is very pleased to share with you the Briefing Paper from the Global Coalition on Women and AIDS (GCWA) and the AIDS Legal Network (ALN), South Africa.
The Paper, Building Women’s Meaningful Participation in the Scale-Up of Vertical Transmission Programmes, is the result of the GCWA and ALN partnership with networks of women living with and affected by HIV and with women's rights advocates from the sexual and reproductive health and rights movement. Conference Chair Denny Roja invites FWN and friends to join some 200 Fil-Am leaders to the Conference on Philippine Entrepreneurship jointly sponsored by the Filipino Professionals and Businessmen’s Association (FILPABA), the Science and Technology Advisory Council of Silicon Valley (STAC SV) and the Filipino Entrepreneurs Network (FEN).
There will be four panels composed of successful Filipino leaders, businessmen and entrepreneurs including Mr. Dado Banatao, managing partner of Tallwood Ventures and noted philantrophist and the chairman of the Philippine House of Representatives Information Technology Committee – Rep. Fred Tinga.
The goals of the conference are to share the message of the compelling need for economic development in the Philippines as a way to alleviate poverty through science and technology and innovation, and present a call to action – how the Filipino Diaspora can be part of the strategic solution.

Justice for Trayvon Martin
George Zimmerman's shooting of Trayvon Martin, an African American teenager, reveals a history of racism in Sanford, FL that has stubbornly refused to die. Weeks after the shooting, the Sanford police department is slow to release details of the shooting and, more surprisingly, has not arrested George Zimmerman, a man who has a history of violence.
We urge you to sign this petition to protect private citizens from gun violence and inept law enforcement. Florida's Attorney General Pam Bondi must step in and provide justice for Trayvon Martin, his family, and the community. Sign petition.

A Day in Philippine History: March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla was born in Tondo, Manila
The Kahimyang Project
On March 4, 1879, Rosa Sevilla, educator, writer and one of the notable suffragists in Asia who fought for the Filipino women's right to vote, was born in Tondo, Manila.
She pursued her desired profession of being a teacher and graduated as "maestra superior" at Assumption College. Together with Pura Villanueva-Kalaw and Pilar Hidalgo-Lim, she lobbied and campaigned for woman suffrage.
Hence, since April 30, 1937, Filipino women have been granted the right to vote and to be voted in elective office, which has led to the election of two women presidents for the country. View article.
