FILIPINA CALL TO ACTION

Stalking Legislation (AB 1982) Hearing Scheduled: April 22nd

The hearing before the public safety committee will occur on April 22. Come and help persuade members of the committee to vote in favor of the legislation to changing stalking from a specific intent crime to a general intent crime. AB 1982 will make stalking a crime if the stalker's actions had the effect of putting the victim in fear for their safety, rather than whether or not the stalker intended to put a victim in fear for their safety. This nuance may seem minor, but it's actually a major change that is central to best practices advocated for by the National Center for Victims Rights and the Model Stalking Code. It is very difficult to prove a stalker's intentions, and as a result many victims of stalking cannot seek a criminal protective order.
