You're invited! Please join us at our Holiday Party to honor a truly remarkable Filipina Woman, Shero & Legend, Vangie Buell, on December 14 at 6:30 PM at Hana Zen Pier 39. For more information and to RSVP, visit www.FilipinaWomensNetwork.org/events

Vangie Buell is a living historical gem: She's the granddaughter of a Buffalo Soldier -- the nickname given by American Indians in the 19th century to black American soldiers. Even rarer: Her grandfather Ernest Stokes was one of the 6,000 Buffalo Soldiers sent to the Philippines to fight during the Spanish-American War during the 1890s. He was one of the few who stayed, married a Filipina (Buell's grandmother) and had children.
In her memoir "Twenty-Five Chickens and a Pig for a Bride: Growing Up in a Filipino Immigrant Family" (T'Boli Publishing, 2006), Buell recounts her grandfather's experience, and her own, as one of the few Filipinos growing up in West Oakland during the 1930s and '40s.
She remembers seeing "No Filipinos or dogs allowed" signs posted at restaurants and having to wear a button that said "I am a loyal Filipino" during World War II, because even though she didn't look Japanese, she was still Asian -- and vulnerable to harassment. -Michelle Devera Louie, SF Chronicle

A Filipino-American activist, Vangie was born in San Pedro, California, grew up in West Oakland and devoted her life to social justice, human dignity, multicultural understanding and equality.

Do you know the history of Filipino martial arts, known as Eskrima or Kali? Eskrima is the traditional martial arts of the Philippines, which emphasizes weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives, or other improvised weapons. According to Mark V. Wiley's book, Filipino Martial Culture, "the origin of eskrima can be traced back to the fighting systems used by Filipinos during internal conflicts. Settlers and traders travelling through the Malay Archipelago brought the influence of silat as well as Chinese and Indian martial arts." In numerous movies, the use of eskrima can be seen. For example, if you've ever watched Matt Damon in the Bourne Identity, you'll be able to see some of his Filipino martial art moves that he uses to fight off the bad guys! It has been said that Damon trained with Dan Inosanto, a Filipino-American martial arts instructor who was a student of Bruce Lee.

Have you ever visited Food.com for some cool, new recipes to prepare for your family or friends? I know I have. As a filipina/o, you probably don't usually look for Filipino recipes on the web. But out of sheer curiosity, I typed in "Filipino recipes" in the search bar of Food.com and lo and behold! There are 384 recipes available! As I took a gander at what recipes Food.com featured, I saw that listed under the category "Most Popular Filipino Recipes" were the familiar and tasty "Baked Lumpia Rolls," "Traditional Adobo," and "Filipino Pandesal Bread"! Scrolling down the page, "Nilaga" and "Maja Blanca" were listed under the category "Newest Filipino Recipes." Have you ever contributed a recipe to Food.com or any other food/recipe website? With Thanksgiving coming up in a few weeks, have you already thought about what's on your menu for Thanksgiving dinner?

        IN THE NEWS

Global Networking: FilAm Republicans Embrace the Tea Party
        Rodel Rodis

The most disturbing news development in the 2012 US presidential elections is not the National Asian American Survey (NAAS) poll showing that more FilAms are registering as Republicans (27%) than as Democrats (24%) but that a large number of FilAm Republicans have embraced the views of the far right Tea Party.

An example of this trend is FilAm pediatrician Dr. Marisha Agana, the Tea Party member who is the Republican candidate running against long-time Democratic incumbent Rep. Tim Ryan in the 8th district of Ohio.

Dr. Agana made news when she tweeted “History has a way of repeating itself: Stalin, Hitler, Mao Tse Tung and now Obama!!!” Her tweet drew this heated response from an irate reader: “You need to immediately apologize for comparing the President of the United States to Hitler. This is not how a person running for office behaves in this country. When you make these types of comments, you diminish the suffering of the Jewish people.”

But the tweet accomplished its intended purpose as it drew national attention to her campaign earning her media coverage on the Huffington Post and on Balitang America which has 250,000 cable subscribers in the US.

Dr. Agana explained to the Huffington Post that because of “the position Mr. Barrack (sic) Hussain (sic) Obama has taken on abortion directly as well as the use of Obamacare to provide contraception and abortifacient drugs I feel it is proper and important to have included him on the list I tweeted about.”

The tweet made her the feature story on Balitang America’s October 25 telecast where she told reporter Nadia Trinidad that she was making “a comparative analogy of President Obama’s stand for pro abortion legislation and for me abortion is the murder of babies.”

The fact is that Pres. Obama has never backed one piece of “pro abortion legislation” although he does support Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 US Supreme Court ruling on the issue of abortion that was decided when Obama was only 12 years old.

The law of the land since 1973 is that a woman has the right to choose what is best for her body and health until the fetus is viable. Republican Tea Party senate candidates like Richard Mourdock from Indiana and Todd Akin from Missouri oppose Roe v. Wade and hold the view that the government should outlaw all abortions even in cases of “legitimate rape” or incest as they are “gifts from God”.

In her Balitang America live interview, Dr. Agana cited Obama’s support for the inclusion of free contraceptives as part of Obamacare as a basis for the comparison to Hitler. When I was asked by Balitang America to comment on Dr. Agana’s assertion, I said that it was obscenely extreme to compare the “killing” of sperm trapped in a condom - preventing them from penetrating the ovum of a woman - as similar to the extermination of six million Jews by Hitler.

I also commented that the Republican Party cleverly picks ethnic minority activists like Dr. Agana to run against unbeatable entrenched Democratic incumbents in order to draw coverage from the ethnic media to show that the Republican Party is inclusive even though there were hardly any minority delegates at the Republican National Convention last August.

In her Huffington Post interview, Dr. Agana described herself as being “compassionate” and as one who looks up to “Mother Teresa of Calcutta” as her role model. This response may come as a shock to those who watched the September 12, 2011 Republican presidential primary debate when Tea Party favorite Rep. Ron Paul said that a sick person should be responsible for himself. “That’s what freedom is all about, taking your own risk,” he said.

CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer followed up and asked Paul: “Are you saying that society should just let him die?” to which the Tea Party audience shouted “Yeah!” Mother Theresa would be horrified.

Eventually, the Tea Party will indoctrinate Dr. Agana to cite Ayn Rand as the more appropriate answer as Rand believes that all people should pursue their own rational self-interest, and not look after the good of others. Rand is the role model of Republican vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan who regularly gives out her book Atlas Shrugged as Christmas presents and who makes his interns read the book.

Ayn Rand’s self-interest world view is rejected by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops which calls for the government to create a “circle of protection” around poor and vulnerable people and to create programs that meet their basic needs and protect their lives and dignity. The Catholic bishops have asked Congress to put the poor first in budget priorities and to oppose measures that reduce resources for essential safety net programs, a request the House ignored the bishops pleas and passed the Ryan Budget Plan last April.

Aside from Dr. Agana, another prominent FilAm supporter of the Tea Party is Nimfa Yamsuan Gamez who was the spokesperson for Gov. Mitt Romney in the Balitang America presidential debate held on October 18 (aired Nov. 1 & 2).

In her October 7 post on Facebook, Gamez repeated the Tea Party charge that Obama is "a devout Muslim” warning people “do not be fooled. Look at his czars... anti-business…anti-American.” So "anti business" that he brought the Dow Jones up from 6,000 in 2009 to over 13,000 now, dramatically increasing the wealth of American investors in Wall Street stock.

Gamez also criticized Obama’s support for comprehensive immigration reform. "Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free healthcare alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America,” she wrote.

After his Dream Act legislation failed to obtain the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster, Pres. Obama issued an executive order allowing alien children who entered the US illegally to obtain legal status, which benefited millions of alien children - including hundreds of thousands of Filipino children in the US - whom Romney plans to deport if he gets elected.

When Gamez emailed me claiming that Gov. Romney showed his “executive ability” by his management of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, I pointed out that Romney sought and obtained a $2.7 billion bailout from the US Congress to complete the winter games. Fellow Republican Senator John McCain deplored this taxpayer bailout of Romney’s olympics by pointing out that the amount was exorbitant compared to the $75 million that Congress spent on the L.A. Summer Olympics.

Gamez responded that regardless of the cost of the $2.7 billion congressional bailout, “what was important with what happened in the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics was that Romney came in, took charge and succeeded in making the prestigious event.”

Gamez then reiterated the Tea Party charge against Obama that "10.5 billions of Federal dollars (were) given to his green company friends" repeating the claim that Romney made during the presidential debate that Pres. Obama invested $90 billion in green energy businesses of which “about half” have failed.

As the Washington Post noted, this claim comes "nowhere near" the truth. The $90 billion was a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act aimed at reducing US dependence on foreign oil and rebuilding the US economy in the short- and long-term. Most of the money went to the states with only $10 billion allocated to fund green energy projects.

As CNN pointed out, not even half of the Recovery Act funding for clean energy went directly to green businesses. “Most of the large projects that benefited from the Department of Energy loan program remain in operationundefinedcontrary to Romney’s assertion.” In fact, companies that filed for bankruptcy received just 4% (not "half" as Romney claimed) of the funding awarded to clean energy companies through the Energy Department’s loan program.

Regardless of whatever the facts may be, Tea Party Republicans like Dr. Agana and Gamez will still remain steadfast in their belief that Obama is the worst president in US history and they will not allow any facts to change their view. Romney can do no wrong, Obama can do no right.

While FilAm Republicans will not likely wear "Put the white back in the White House" t-shirts popular in Tea Party rallies, the fact that so many of them are now willing to wholeheartedly embrace the extremist views of the Tea Party is the most deplorable development of the 2012 US presidential elections.

Do you know the history of the Philippine flag? If you don't, please keep reading! At the beginning of the second phase of the Philippine Revolution, the idea of a new flag for the Philippines was personally brought up by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, President of the Revolutionary Government. The flag was sewn by Mrs. Marcela Marino Agoncillo, who was the wife of the first Filipino diplomat. The flag was completed in a total of five days and was given a "baptism of fire and blood" in Cavite (http://www.philippineconsulatela.org/).

Domestic Violence Advocates met on October 15 and discussed how the votes of the San Francisco Supervisors Avalos (D11), Campos (D9), Kim (D6) and Olague (D5) to reinstate Mirkarimi as Sheriff impact the community by sending the wrong message that it is okay to batter your domestic partner, the negative impact on the integrity of the current domestic violence programs, and the need for more public messaging and education campaigns. The overall question was, "How do we move forward?" Districts 6, 9 and 11 are the three districts that have the highest population of Filipinos in San Francisco. Watch for next steps.

Did you know...the barong Tagalog, an intricately embroidered, lightweight garment usually worn to formal events by men, has also become fashionable for women??

Designer Veejay Floresca infused Filipino culture with New York high fashion into his 2012 holiday designs collection during this year's Philippine Fashion Week. If you take a look at how Floresca designs incorporate the traditional barong, the beauty of the traditional barong style is still very much there. Floresca says,"'My collection is actually challenging every woman that you can still look chic wearing our national fabric.'" The fabric of the barong Tagalog is usually made from pineapple leaf fibers or banana silk. Read the article on Floresca's barong designs here: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/261159/lifestyle/design/how-women-should-wear-the-barong-tagalog

For all the art lovers out there, have you heard of Fernando Amorsolo before? Well, if you haven't...Amorsolo is considered to be among the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines. Born in Manila in 1892, Amorsolo is best known for his use of light in his paintings of rural Philippine landscapes and portraits. With his impressionistic technique and style, Amorsolo has been referred to as a "pioneer of Philippine art":
Amorsolo's pioneering use of impressionistic techniques and shimmering sunlight on pastoral landscape is significant not only in the development of Philippine art, but also in the formation of Filipino notions of self and identity. His idyllic country scenes, beautiful maidens, and colorfully dressed peasants planting or harvesting rice distilled an imagined sense of nationhood in counterpoint to the American colonial rule - an idealized image of the true Filipino that persist today. As you should already know, it is Filipino-American Heritage Month! But do you know how October became the official month to celebrate our Filipino roots?
The lovely month of October, when the leaves start to turn from vivid green to the warmer shades of yellow, orange, and red, was initially established by the Filipino American National History Society (FANHS) in 1992. But in the year 2009, a law was passed officially recognizing October as Filipino-American Heritage Month.
Fascinated and want to read more? Check out FANHS's website by clicking here!
I hope you checked out the "Events & Meetings" section of this issue for upcoming events in honor of Filipino roots!

        CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS

For this week's issue of ePahayagan, this section should probably be temporarily changed to "Connecting with MY Pinay Roots" because recently, I have gathered some interesting facts on my family history.

Over the weekend while enjoying a relaxing visit to my parents' home, I came across a thick, heavy book sitting on the coffee table. The book was blue with the words "Students' Philippine Almanac" in shiny gold letters across the front. As I turned the book over in my hands, a yellow, crumpled post-it note was sticking out from between the worn out pages. It read: "Grandma's great uncle, Camilo Jacob" and had a squiggly arrow pointing down towards a picture. After taking a good look at the photo and reading the small column to the left of it, I learned that Camilo Jacob, my great great great uncle, was one of the fifteen martyrs of the 1897 Execution of the Bicol Martrys at Luneta! According to the article in the Students' Philippine Almanac:
The fifteen Bicolanos were among the first victims of Spanish cruelty after the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution. Of the fifteen, eleven were executed at Luneta and the rest died during incarceration or in exile. The fifteen martyrs were: Father Gabriel Prieto, Father Severino Diaz, Father Innocencio Herrera, Manuel Abella, Domingo Abella, Ramon Abella, Camilo Jacob, Tomas Prieto, Florencio Lerma, Macario Valentin, Leon Hernandez, Mariano Arana, and Mariano Ordenanza.
I am deeply honored to be related to a passionate man who was unafraid to defend his country. Recognize any of the names listed? Let me know! - epahayagan@ffwn.org

        CONNECTING WITH YOUR PINAY ROOTS

Featured in the latest Filipina Women's Network Magazine, the FWN100 2012 finalists had to answer the question: What Filipino custom or tradition would you like to pass on to others? Interestingly enough, many of the finalists listed their answer as "mano po," the showing of respect to an elder by the touching of the elder's hand to one's forehead.

One 2012 finalist, Theresa Chua (Builder & Emerging Leader), writes, "Living in a culture that typically diminishes senior citizens, I feel it is critical to make a profound effort to keep this tradition alive. Our elders are fountains of wisdom that for the most part, remain untapped. Our elders are society's best mentors and deserve our respect and gratitude."

Another popular response from the FWN100 2012 Finalists was "bayanihan," which finalist Vivian Zalvidea Araullo (Innovator & Thought Leader) defines as "harnessing the community spirit to help others. In my opinion, Filipinos are generally hospitable, friendly, and really want to help others. Bayanihan would go a long way in today's world."

In addition, finalist Marian Catedral-King (Behind the Scenes Leader) agrees, saying, "The act of being selfless and being ready to help anyone in need is the ultimate word to describe a Pinoy or Pinay. My family has always instilled in us the importance of helping and giving oneself and time to others."
